2026-2027 Requirements

Freshman Academic Scholarships are now awarded with and without an ACT or SAT score and are now open to ALL first time incoming freshmen. Scholarships will be automatically awarded to first time incoming freshmen, who have never attended another institution after high school graduation, upon full acceptance to Utah Tech prior to the March 1st deadline.

No application required.

  • Must be fully admitted to UT for the Fall Semester by the March 1st deadline. (These scholarships are not awarded for Spring admissions.)
  • Be a US Citizen or have Permanent Resident Status for top academic scholarships; DACA/Undocumented/Dreamer students can qualify for “Other” Non-Resident Waivers.
  • Be a first time incoming freshman who has not attended another institution after high school graduation.
  • Have an intent to graduate from Utah Tech University
  • Scholarships are determined using index score or the non-weighted GPA without rounding up, and using the highest composite ACT or SAT score without consideration for superscores.
  • Academic scholarships will not be awarded to students who are admitted after March 1st. New transcripts or test scores submitted after March 1st will NOT be considered for top scholarship eligibility.

Non-Resident Freshmen Scholarships

Utah Tech University awards Academic Scholarships to first time freshmen who are fully admitted by March 1st based on their unweighted cumulative High School GPA or index score (GPA & ACT/SAT combined).

How to calculate an Index Score: Unweighted GPA x 10 = GPA score + highest ACT Composite

(EX: 3.5 GPA x 10 = 35 GPA Score + 30 ACT = 65 Index Score

Have you taken the SAT? Not a problem! There is a conversion online here.

Deadlines: you can only receive one of the following non-resident scholarships

  • Top 3 Academic – March 1st
  • WUE, Red Rocks, Good Neighbor, and Half Merit – July 15th

Students are awarded merit scholarships with and without consideration to the ACT or SAT tests. Though they are not required for admissions or all merit scholarships, placement tests are still required in determining placement in Math and English.

UT offers the College Placement Test which, though not required for merit scholarships, is helpful in determining placement in Math and English. For information, dates, cost and exclusions, please go to the Testing Center.

The GED, HiSET, and any other High School Equivalency make students ineligible for incoming freshman scholarships. Home School students who are not educated through a certified Home School entity are also not eligible for incoming freshmen scholarships. Home School students must have a certified transcript. More information can be obtained from the Admissions Office at admissions@utahtech.edu.

NEW TIMELINES

Utah Tech University has switched from a year-based timeline for academic scholarships to a credit-based timeline. After years of research, we have switched requirements to keep the scholarships from year to year to a minimum of 12 credits per semester, instead of the traditional 15. As a result, if we kept the timeline at 4 years, most students would not graduate before they ran out of scholarships. 12 credits per semester for 8 semesters = 96 credits minimum, when a bachelors degree requires at least 120 of the right credits.

We have switched to a credit-based system to allow more flexibility in each student’s choice of enrollment and timeline. Each freshman who receives a scholarship will have that scholarship, provided they meet the yearly requirements outlined in their award letters, until they get to 130 overall attempted credits. If you are coming in with no other college credits, and you take 12 credits a semester, that scholarship should be there for 5.5 years! However, this will include ALL attempted credits, including but not limited to: Concurrent Enrollment, Dual Enrollment, AP Classes posted to transcripts, FLATS Tests, Vertical Credits, IB credits, etc. This will also include any classes you attempt here, including summer courses (though there is no scholarship during that semester), along with any F’s, Withdrawals, Audits, etc.

If you are coming in with 24 or more college credits, you can request an extension of your scholarship for up to 2 semesters to help get you do that goal line.

If you have more questions about this, contact the Scholarship Office.

HOW ARE YOU NOTIFIED?

Utah Tech Scholarship Office starts awarding scholarship in late October/early November each year. Once a student is admitted to the institution they are notified of a letter within 2-3 business days. Letters are sent to your admission email as well as a text to your cell phone, if provided. If a student is admitted prior to the start of awards they will receive a letter as soon as we start awarding.
