Your Tuition & Mandatory Student Fees Paid

Trailblazer Promise

What is the Trailblazer Promise Scholarship?

The Trailblazer Promise, or Utah Promise, Scholarship is a “last dollar” scholarship created from a needs-based program in Utah. These “last dollar” funds are applied to qualified students after all other aid is applied to a recipient’s account, to fill the gap of what has been offered and the student’s tuition and mandatory student fees.

What other aid is considered first?

Federal Pell Grant and institutional scholarships will be applied to a student’s account first. Then any other state aid such as Regents, Opportunity, New Century, etc, will be applied next. Finally, any third party/private scholarships intended specifically for tuition and fees only will be applied.

After all that aid is applied to a student’s account, the Trailblazer Promise will go in and cover the rest of your base tuition and mandatory student fees.

If Trailblazer Promise funds are applied or paid, and a student receives any additional Federal Pell Grant, institutional or state scholarships, the Promise funds will be reduced.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?

This is automatically awarded to qualified undergraduate Utah Residents who are not already receiving aid that covers their base resident undergraduate tuition and mandatory student fees.

Who determines if I am eligible?

The US Government determines Pell Grant eligibility through a completed FAFSA. Trailblazer Promise is awarded automatically to qualified students who apply and complete their FAFSA first. Any aid that opens up due to awarding of more scholarships and other aid will be reallocated to more students.

How will I know if I am eligible?

When a student is eligible for Pell Grant or Trailblazer Promise it will show on their electronic Financial Aid award letter.

Is this award deferrable?

Unfortunately, the Trailblazer Promise award is not a deferrable scholarship, as it is based on that year’s FAFSA and awarded only for one year at a time.

How many credits do I have to take?

If you are a Trailblazer Promise recipient, it is required that you take a minimum of 12 credits each semester.

Why did my award change/get removed?

If you were initially offered the Trailblazer Promise and your award is suddenly reduced or removed, it can be a couple of reasons:

  • You have received another institutional scholarship that either caused a reduction or exceeded your TB Promise award causing it to be removed.
  • You have received a state scholarship such as the Opportunity Scholarship which is also a tuition and fees only scholarship.
  • You have received a private/3rd party award that is specifically for tuition and fees.

Why can't this cover more than tuition and mandatory student fees?

The State of Utah determined that these funds can only be applied towards base tuition and mandatory student fees. We have to follow those guidelines when awarding. It cannot apply towards other charges nor can it be refunded to the student.

Does this award cover differential tuition or class fees?

Unfortunately, these funds cannot be applied towards those charges on student accounts.

What is considered "good standing"?

To be a student in good standing, you must pass 68% of the total number of credits attempted while maintaining a minimum 2.0 overall GPA. Failure to meet satisfactory academic progress may result in the cancellation of your scholarship. Complete withdrawals or zero completion due to all F’s is grounds for immediate suspension with no probation semester.

Can I receive this scholarship while in a second bachelors or graduate program?

Unfortunately, this award cannot be used in a second bachelors or graduate programs. One of the main requirements is that you maintain Pell eligibility, and Pell Grant eligibility goes away once a student graduates with a bachelors degree.
